Episode 14: Dogfish Head Dragons and Yum Yums Pale Ale

May 15, 2018

In this bonus episode we drink Dragons and Yum Yums by Dogfish Head brewery. We spotlight our first brewery from outside Texas because a percentage of us are Flaming Lips fans and some of us like pale ales.

And we finally answer that age old question, "What did Dela wear?"

Show Notes:

Dogfish Head began in June of 1995 when they opened Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats - Delaware's first brewpub. The plan was to bring original beer, original food and original music to the area.

Not only was Dogfish Head Delaware’s first brewpub, it was the smallest commercial brewery in America. With their first batches brewed on a system that was essentially three kegs with propane burners underneath, they were brewing 12–gallon batches of beer for a whole restaurant. They ended up brewing three times a day, five days a week! But brewing on such a small system gave them the ability to try out as many different recipes as they wanted. Insert ‘off-centered ales for off-centered people.’ Our hunger for weird ingredients and venturing off the beaten path was just getting started.

Fast-forward to today and they’re still motivated by non-conformity. By spontaneity. By experimentation.

So Dogfish Head is no stranger to musical collaborations. Previous releases include Bitches Brew inspired by Miles Davis, American Beauty with the Grateful Dead, and Beer Thousand with Guided By Voices. And now they have Dragons & YumYums – a liquid tribute to The Flaming Lips.

Most everyone knows The Flaming Lips thanks to their 1993 hit, “She Don’t Use Jelly”. Their elaborate and over-the-top shows and known eccentricity makes partnering with the original “Off-Centered” folks at Dogfish Head seem natural.

With a shared goal of making this collaboration an epic, sensory enveloping experience at the intersection of creative beer paired with creative music, both Dogfish and The Flaming Lips believe this is the first time a band has been so pivotal and deeply involved in the creation of the beer, the ingredients that were chosen, and the authoring of a song made specifically in tribute of the beer.

Dragons & YumYums

ABV: 6.5

IBU: 25

RELEASE: April - August

STYLE: Pale Ale

An explosion of fruit in every sip, Dragons & YumYums is an intensely tropical - yet subtlety bitter - pale ale brewed with a combination of dragonfruit, yumberry, passionfruit, pear juice and black carrot juice. Clocking in at 6.5% ABV and 25 IBU

A sensory enveloping experience at the intersection of creative beer paired with creative music, the energy of this union inspired Flaming Lips front man Wayne Coyne to use ingredients from the beer - dragonfruit and yumberries - as characters in two original songs, The Story of Yum Yum and Dragon and Pouring Beer in Your Ear … making this the first beer with its own theme song!

For Record Store Day (April 21), The Flaming Lips are putting out a limited edition 7" vinyl titled "The Story of Yum Yum and Dragon." The two songs on the record are inspired by Dogfish Head Brewery's new beer Dragons & YumYums. The tart pale ale gets its name because it's brewed with dragonfruit and yumberries. Those fruits provided Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne with the two characters at the center of the EP, Yum Yum and Dragon.

In addition to the two beer-inspired songs. The band will release 100 translucent records filled with the pink Dragons & YumYums beer. There will actually be beer inside the record. But this version will be extremely hard to get your hands on. It will only be available at a handful of special events in April. Some of the cities hosting those events include Atlanta, Baltimore, Brooklyn, Key West, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, Nashville, Phoenix, Tempe, and Washington DC.
